Summer sucks. It’s too hot to railfan. But are we smart enough to not? Absolutely not. So, on the hottest day of the year so far, we set out for an afternoon on the NS Pittsburgh Line, and I shot some stills and video.

I grew up, and learned how to railfan in Philadelphia. Every once in a while I get a chance to go back and checkout my old haunts. This spring, I got a chance to do that with some friends and show them around the city that was so formative.

CSX is rapidly replacing all of it’s B&O era color position lights. The interlockings in downtown Baltimore seem to be the next to fall. Carroll has already lost its legendary full installation (with three lights above and below the target), and it looks like the signals around Bailey’s Wye are the next to go. A safetrans “Darth Vader” gantry has been installed next to the bridge at Ridgely St, and it looks like it’s ready to be swung into place any day now.
